Jenő Barcsay, the Kossuth Prize-winning graphic artist and painter, was born on January 14, 1900. His body of work is closely tied to the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts (now the Hungarian University of Fine Arts). To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the artist's birth, the Hungarian University of Fine Arts will host a major series of events in 2025.
The anniversary year will include exhibitions, book launches, the publication of a collection of studies, the reissue of two of Barcsay’s works, and a conference to honor the master's legacy. The highlight of the commemorative year will be a special exhibition opening on July 14, 2025, in the main gallery of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. This exhibit will showcase a selection of Barcsay’s paintings and anatomical drawings. Rather than a comprehensive overview, the exhibition will focus on key creative periods, themes, and motifs, emphasizing the artist's versatility. Special attention will be given to his lesser-known late abstract works, known as the "black period," as well as the original drawings from his foundational book Artistic Anatomy (1953), for which he received the Kossuth Prize.
The Barcsay 125 Anniversary Year is organized by the Hungarian University of Fine Arts with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation. Key partners in the event series include the Ferenczy Museum Center in Szentendre and the Jenő Barcsay Fine Arts Foundation.
