Erasmus+ Policy Statement
The mission and fundamental goals of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts have been unchanged ever since its foundation 150 years ago: to safeguard Hungary’s living art traditions in all fields of fine arts and, at the same time, to create new values open to contemporary trends in arts reflecting on them permanently through a course-based teaching of classical techniques and the most modern media and techniques, tapping into the international discourse. The international strategy and endeavours to modernise of the University have been reinforcing one another and have been inseparable ever since its foundation.
Traditionally, the basis of teaching is mastering the basics of the craft, which presupposes an in-depth study into the technical procedures for creating objects, just as much as the knowledge of anatomical or spatial representation discernible from the Renaissance tradition of imagery. All this knowledge expands continuously and naturally taking on new technical and digital procedures, while an infrastructure supporting independent study enables students to reflect on the globalised digital world in a fresh and innovative manner. Theoretical knowledge builds on to this foundation of technical craftsmanship – as students get to know the historical, aesthetic and philosophical interrelations of arts. The doctoral school ensures high standards and successful research work. Through public exhibitions and presentations, competitions and degree exhibitions at the end and during the academic year not only evaluation within the institution, but opportunities for external competition are also possible.
The University’s strategy of internationalisation is based on two interrelated pillars: in addition to teaching in Hungarian, we also launched foreign (English) language training and increased our participation in the Erasmus+ programme. Foreign language training at the University exists in several forms: foreign students can participate in courses delivered in English; the Department of Painting plans to open its 5-year undivided programme in English in 2021, to be followed by opening other programmes in English in the years thereafter; the entire programme of the Doctoral School is already accessible in English.
The Erasmus+ programme is the most important basis of the University’s international activity. The primary objective of the University’s Erasmus+ mobility and foreign partnership programmes is to enable students to personalise their studies, to choose when and where to study and to enable them to work in an international environment as students. Mobility and learning languages mutually reinforce one another: language skills increase interests in foreign studies, while foreign studies improve language skills, and assist equally in the understanding of other cultures and one’s own identity. The projects and exhibitions implemented together with foreign partners ultimately strengthen the increasingly powerful incorporation of Hungarian arts to the international contemporary art scene, while reinforcing the international role of Hungarian arts.
The University’s International and Exhibitions Office administers the mobility scholarships of its students and staff within the Erasmus+ programme. The work of the International and Exhibitions Office is directed by the general deputy to the rector who is also in charge of international relations. The Erasmus Rules of the University ensure compliance with the principles of ECHE and the transparency and quality requirements of applications and administration. The EU4Art European universities initiative makes up a separate structural unit within the institution.

The Hungarian University of Fine Arts only accepts applications for the upcoming academic year. Admission to each department is based on the acceptance by HUFA departmental review of complete applications. Applicants are evaluated on their creative work, and all applicants must submit a portfolio of work consisting of a maximum of twenty pieces. Applicants whose work is time-based should submit film stills, video stills, and/or performance documentation as still images and should also provide URLs for time-based work available online.
Please note: your choice of program(s) during the application must be reflected/supported by the content of your portfolio, i.e. you will only be considered for scenography, for example, if the work presented in the portfolio shows that you have sufficient background/previous academic training in the field.

Autumn semester/entire academic year: 15 May
Spring semester: 30 October
