General information
In the Painter Department, theoretical and practical instruction is given in small classes, traditionally organised around "masters", in accordance with an individualised programme. On the one hand, this method presupposes a continuous, seminar-like collaboration, and on the other hand, it allows not only internal assessment but also external assessment through end-of-year and mid-year exhibitions, presentations, competitions and degree exhibitions.
In recent times, thanks in part to the influence of new media and information technology, the boundaries between artistic genres have become increasingly blurred, as can be seen in the diversity of student work. The Painter Department collaborates effectively with the Sculptor, Graphic Arts and Intermedia Departments in the form of joint thematic exhibitions and competitions. In addition to the study of painting traditions and techniques in the classrooms, the curriculum includes a discussion of contemporary art phenomena and newer technical, stylistic and media issues.
