General information
The training of the Department of Visual Design follows a trend that is increasingly emerging in theatre and the cinematic image arts, according to which the creation of complex performing-artistic visual worlds - i.e. the creation of sets and costumes - is to be understood as a single entity and is often the competence of a single artist. The aim of the Department is to train designers who are able to integrate themselves organically into the theatrical or cinematographic workflow, but who have a sovereign artistic vision and a creative mindset, while respecting the fundamental requirement of realism.
Education is divided into two levels. The three-year Bachelor's degree (BA) is designed to provide a foundation and mastery of the craft, leading to a qualification in applied visual design with three optional specialisations: set and costume design; costume and puppet design; set and puppet design. The courses are taught by eminent Hungarian representatives of the theatre and motion picture design profession, giving students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of artistic approaches.
Each semester, they will participate in a theatre or film internship, where they will gain first-hand experience of the work of design studios and all stages of the production process.
The two-year Master's degree (MA) aims to provide a broad and multifaceted transmission of personal approaches and methods of art. At the end of the course, students can obtain a qualification as a visual artist specialising in theatre. Led by eminent theatre designers, the art education aims to provide a complete theatrical knowledge and to enable a complex creative response to the demands of both traditional and new artistic fields. Thanks to this integrated training, our graduates enter the labour market equipped with the full intellectual and technical knowledge base of the digital age, which is witnessing a continuous, unprecedented expansion and interpenetration of cultural fields based on the visual.
The Department is committed to promoting experimentation in theatrical form, to creating collaborative projects with students from the similar universities of the arts, and to maintaining close links with the most prominent professionals in the various fields of the performing arts.
