Rector’s Welcome
AN ART UNIVERSITY IN THE 21st CENTURY
Rector’s Welcome
AN ART UNIVERSITY IN THE 21st CENTURY
The Hungarian University of Fine Arts is one of the flagships of Hungarian art education, covering all fields of fine arts. Throughout its 150 years of history, it has been seen as a reference point for art education throughout the Carpathian Basin. The University's teaching and artistic research are characterised by a duality of tradition and constant renewal and experimentation. Its professional weight and credibility are also due to its ability to keep pace with the constant change that is the intrinsic essence of all art, including fine art, for a century and a half.
Our stated aim is to provide students who choose the fine arts as a profession with a high level of knowledge, the freedom to develop their autonomous artistic personality and the opportunity to become responsible intellectuals. To this end, they can count on the support of our instructors, who are constantly reassessing tradition, and who encourage free artistic experimentation and invention.
The whole range of artistic expressions and creative methods can be found in the institution today, from the classical genres of painting, graphics and sculpture to inter-media. In addition to drawing, art-anatomy, pattern-making and painting practices based on mimetic tasks, a medial, interdisciplinary, experimental approach and the latest genre options such as street art, perfomance, installation and nature art are also strongly present in the teaching. This is why, after 30 years, the desire was born to add two new courses to the university's curriculum. The BA in Visual Art and the MA in Fine Art, which build on drawing skills, emphasise not only classical technical knowledge but also installation design, experimentation with performative expressions of fine art, landscape art, public art and body art. Alongside our autonomous artist courses, our long-established applied art courses offer students the highest levels of training in restoration and visual design, while the two courses run by the Department of Art Theory train curators and future theorists - the only ones in the country to do so.
We are delighted and proud that our university is housed in the prestigious Andrássy Avenue Palace, the former Mintarajztanoda building and the magical Epreskert. Today, the interior of the old Műcsarnok (Art Hall), home to contemporary art, and the frescoes of Károly Lotz are once again in their original splendour, and our old exhibition spaces, the Barcsay Hall and the Aula, play an important role not only in representing the university, but also in the teaching and research work of the university through thematic and group student exhibitions closely linked to the institution.
Together with my colleagues, we strive to give the students of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts the space to develop their qualities and to build the reputation of the institution with a forward-looking approach that is worthy of its past.
I am convinced that the Hungarian University of Fine Arts has a mission to enrich Hungarian culture as a whole by promoting the acceptance of Hungarian fine arts, changing its position, integrating its achievements into the community and thus generating social change.
