General information

In the academic year 2009/2010, the Hungarian University of Fine Arts started a Bachelor of Fine Arts Theory (BA) programme and in 2010 the Department of Fine Arts Theory was established.

Since the academic year 2009-10, the Department has been offering the BA in Art Theory on an annual basis.

Bachelor of Fine Art Theory (BA)
The Bachelor of Fine Art Theory (BA) is a full-time course leading to a qualification in Fine Art Analysis. The Department of Art Theory is the unit responsible for the programme. The duration of the course is 6 semesters and 180 credits are required to obtain the degree. The number of state-funded places is 10 and the number of fee-paying places is expected to be 4. The Bachelor of Fine Art Theory offers students a basic and comprehensive knowledge of art theory, curatorial and practical skills. The course aims to provide a complex basic education for future managers of the visual arts: graduates will have a basic, comprehensive understanding of the history and contemporary trends in the visual arts, art institutions, art projects, the broad spectrum of curatorial work and art-related disciplines. Graduates with a BA in Fine Art Theory will be able to participate effectively in the management of institutions and projects aimed at creating cultural productions and mediating between artists, society, art lovers, patrons, connoisseurs and the general public. The bachelor's degree offers a programme that can provide a comprehensive range of practical skills and related theoretical background. To this end, it provides an up-to-date basic training in the field of cultural funding (museums, galleries, art magazines, corporate sector), which is also applicable to the labour market, teaching not only the theory but also the practice of art projects (exhibition planning, publication design, public relations, project funding, writing proposals, organising international programmes) and keeping up to date with the latest research findings in the field of art and art theory, primarily contemporary art. Graduates will be equipped with the skills needed to continue their studies at Masters level.

Master of Arts in Contemporary Art Theory and Curatorial Studies (MA)
The Hungarian University of Fine Arts (http://www.mke.hu/) will again offer the Master's degree in Contemporary Art Theory and Curatorial Studies (Expert in Contemporary Art Theory and Curatorial Studies) starting from the academic year 2022-23.

The title of the diploma is: Contemporary Art Studies and Curatorial Studies Professional.

The course is a full-time, mainly Hungarian-language, 4-semester, full-time course, without the possibility of a cross-semester.

The aim of the training is to train art professionals who, with their knowledge of art theory and their communication, writing and analytical skills, are able to initiate, conceptualise, communicate and represent complex projects, research, exhibitions and events of significant cultural-artistic value and social importance in the field of Hungarian and international contemporary art, and to conduct professionally independent and relevant research on contemporary art practice and the related critical and theoretical discourse; to analyse and communicate contemporary art practice through academic research and criticism, and to collaborate with the domestic exhibition and art institutional system, artists, experts and other actors in the field of art. Graduates will be prepared to continue their studies at doctoral level.
