The “Researching Imaginaries” International Research Program concludes in Gothenburg
Report
The one-week international research and knowledge exchange programme ‘Researching Imaginaries’ of the University of Gothenburg's HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design (19-23 May 2025) has been successfully completed.
The research week explored the question of artistic imagination as a means for artistic research. The programme was the third stage of the BIP collaboration ‘Perception and Action’ 2023 in Budapest, initiated by Szabolcs KissPál, which brought together students from the HUFA's doctoral school, researchers and doctoral students from the University of Gothenburg's Art and Design doctoral programme, and students from of the doctoral school of the Krakow University of Art (Szkoły Doktorskiej Akademia Sztuk Pięknych im. Jana Matejki w Krakowie) who organised the second part of the BIP programme in 2024 in Krakow.
At the heart of the research week was the creative process of doctoral students and researchers based on an intensive exchange of knowledge. During the week, students were organised into groups working respectively with image, music and film. The artists’ work was supported by a conceptual framework of lectures and discussions related to the previous online sessions, reflecting on the issues of artistic, social and political imagination. The event was also streamed live online. The speakers included renowned international artists, curators, theorists and academics: Jason E. Bowman, Charles Esche, Vincenzo Estremo, Cătălin Gheorghe, Petra Johansson, Kerstin Mey, Andrea Phillips, Nuno Sacramento, as well as teachers of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts: dr. Szabolcs KissPál and dr. Tünde Varga.
The students presented the result of their creative work process on the final day of the week, and each presentation was followed by a joint discussion and reflection.
The detailed programme of the research week is available on the University of Gothenburg HDK-Valand website.
