Prof. Dr. Till Ansgar Baumhauer’s lecture and seminar in the Doctoral School. 18-19 March, 2025.
Prof. Dr. Till Ansgar Baumhauer (University of Nürtingen-Geislingen (HfWU)) held a lecture and workshop at the Doctoral School
„Art and war in long-term conflicts. An artistic research project on the visualization of wartime experience”
Till Baumhauer received his Ph.D in fine arts from Bauhaus University at Weimar, the first university to offer artistic Ph.Ds in Germany since 2008. In his thesis and project, Baumhauer focuses on two long-term conflicts from different times and cultural contexts: the Thirty Years War in central Europe (1618-1648) and the Afghanistan conflict (since 1979, ending with the withdrawal of the international troops in 2022).
Focusing on parallel structures and analogies from the viewpoint of conflict studies, he developed an artistic process which overlapped testimonies and aesthetics of both conflicts, at the same time investigating on transcultural artistic cooperation and understanding and on the readability of images beyond their cultural origins.
